Adventure Dog Walking in the West Kootenays

Some dogs are happy with a lap around the block. Others come home from a short walk and are still bouncing off the walls an hour later. If your dog is the second kind, and your workday doesn't leave room for a two-hour outing, that's the gap Mountain Paws fills.

We take small groups of dogs out on proper hikes, not quick strolls. Your dog gets picked up from home, spends 1.5 to 2 hours on the trail running, sniffing, practising recall and playing with a few well-matched friends, then comes home tired, happy and ready to settle. We work with dog owners across the West Kootenays, from Rossland and Trail to Castlegar and South Slocan, and we've been doing this kind of work for 28 years.

This page explains what a hike with us actually involves, who it suits, how we keep the groups safe, and how a new dog gets started.

Is an Adventure Hike Right for Your Dog?

Adventure walking suits a lot of dogs, but not every situation. It tends to be a great fit for:

  • High-energy dogs that need more than a neighbourhood walk to stay calm at home

  • Young, social dogs that enjoy other dogs and benefit from structured play

  • Working owners who are out all day and want a reliable weekly routine

  • Rotating shift workers, whose schedules don't fit a fixed pattern (we make exceptions for you)

  • Owners working on recall who'd like that practice to happen regularly, in real settings

It's not the right service if you need a last-minute or one-off walk. We work with regular weekly clients, booked 2 to 5 times a week, and we don't offer drop-in visits. That steady routine is what lets us build a real relationship with each dog and keep our groups well matched.
If your dog needs care while you're away overnight, our in-home dog boarding [LINK WHEN LIVE] is a better fit, and boarding dogs still get their hikes.

Why Dog Owners Reach Out

Most people who contact us aren't looking for "a dog walker" in the abstract. They're trying to solve a specific problem at home.

The dog has energy left over at the end of the day. A dog that hasn't had a real outlet will often find one indoors. A long hike in the middle of the day takes the edge off, so evenings are calmer for everyone.

The workday is too long. Plenty of owners leave early and get home late. Splitting that day with a 2 to 3 hour outing means the dog isn't waiting alone from morning to evening.

Off-leash safety feels like a gamble. Some owners would love their dog to run free but worry about recall, wildlife or other trail users. Small, supervised groups with recall training built in give that freedom some structure.

A bored dog gets into trouble. Chewing, digging and barking are often boredom more than bad behaviour. New trails every day, plus training games along the way, give a dog's brain something to work on.

From Free Consult to First Hike

We don't put a new dog straight into a group. Getting started looks like this:

1. Get in touch. Fill in the form on our contact page with your full address, your dog's breed, weight and age, and the service you're after. We'll be in touch within a week (check your junk folder, just in case).

2. Free new-client consult. We take the time to learn about your dog, your routine and what you're hoping for.

3. App invite. We'll send you an invite to PetPocketbook, the app we use for booking, invoicing and your dog's information.

4. One-on-one time first. Before joining a group, we get to know your dog individually so we can build trust and see how they respond to us.

5. Joining a group. Once your dog is ready, they're matched with a small group that suits their energy and temperament.

6. A regular schedule. Your dog settles into a weekly routine of 2 to 5 hikes.

It takes a little longer than handing over a key and hoping for the best. That extra time is what makes the group hikes safer for every dog in them.

How We Keep Small-Group Hikes Safe

What We Offer

Small Groups

We cap our hikes at 6 to 8 dogs. That's a more natural pack size, and it means every dog stays in view and gets attention.

Safe Transport

Dogs ride tethered or belted in a ventilated vehicle with temperature warning systems.

Trained Handlers

We have a dog training background and trainers on staff, and our walkers are trained thoroughly before heading out on their own.

First Aid Ready

We're Dog First Aid certified, we carry first aid kits on every outing, and we have emergency and contingency plans in place.

Tick Prevention

We use an essential-oil tick repellent spray on the trail.

Insured

We carry liability insurance.

Why Owners Choose Mountain Paws

There are a few reasons people stay with us for years rather than months.

Experience. Our owner has spent 28 years caring for dogs and running dog walking businesses around British Columbia. That experience shows in the small details, like how a group is matched or how a nervous dog is introduced.

Training built in. Our hikes aren't just exercise. Recall, agility and basic obedience are part of every outing, so your dog keeps learning.

Real reviews. We have 72 Google reviews with a 5.0 rating. Owners often mention how tired and happy their dogs come home, and how much they look forward to their hike days.

A team you can meet. You'll get to know the people walking your dog. You can meet the Mountain Paws team before your first consult.

Clear communication. Booking, invoicing and report cards all run through one app, so you always know what's happening.
